The Why and How of Detox

Our bodies are exposed to a multitude of toxins on a daily basis. Exposure to chemicals, heavy metals, pollutants and pathogens in our environment can contribute to illness. Fortunately, when healthy, our bodies are capable of detoxing and getting rid of harmful waste. If the toxic load is too heavy and/or the body is unhealthy, the mechanism for detox in the liver gets sluggish and toxins remain in the body for too long. Toxic burden on the body can lead to a plethora of symptoms including:

  • Fatigue

  • Weight gain

  • Brain fog

  • Mood changes

  • Poor concentration

  • Bloating, indigestion

  • Aches and pains

  • Decreased immune function

  • Skin issues

Quality nutrition and lifestyle measures can support the body’s natural detox process. The lymphatic (“lymph”) system is a part of the immune system that is a network of blood vessels and lymph nodes designed to protect the body against outside invaders (Levy, 2015). By improving and maintaining a healthy lymph system, we can improve our immune support against acute and chronic health issues. Dr. Josh Axe DC, DNM, CN (2023) provides eight ways to detox:

  • Switch out sugar

  • Eliminate processed foods

  • Consume whole foods

  • Put detox foods and ingredients in your daily diet

  • Invest in some detox supplements

  • Get enough sleep

  • Exercise more often

  • De-stress

Start small. Make simple changes that can decrease your overall toxic load. Your body and health will show your efforts! My Tools for Detox guide is a great resource for supporting your body’s detox process.
